The passage
Suddenly there appeared above my head a woman of a countenance exceeding venerable. Her eyes were bright as fire, and of a more than human keenness.

Two scenes side by side: Boethius in his cell with Philosophy attending him, and the Wheel of Fortune with four riders at the cardinal points — the crowned king at top, the same man crushed at bottom. The painter understood that the two images are the same image. The room and the wheel are the same place. You are either on the wheel or in the room with Philosophy. You cannot be in both.
