The passage
Those poisons are more fell, / More potent to expel / Man from his high estate, / Which subtly penetrate, / And leave the body whole, / But deep infect the soul.
Circe’s calm gesture against the indignity of the transformed men. The cup is the mechanism. The wand points the direction. Nobody forced them to drink. Boethius reverses the moral: Circe was honest — she showed you the beast. The real poison leaves the body intact and hollows out the soul. The 1606 print captures the moment of transformation — half man, half pig — the state most people live in without knowing it.
